Overview
In this hands-on, technique-driven course participants will learn to grade the three essential pattern shapes - the skirt, the bodice, and the pant - under the guidance of one of Australia's leading grading experts.
Over three focused sessions participants will work through grading each core block up and down in size using standard grading principles. Each session includes live demonstrations, guided drafting, and hands-on application with instructor feedback. Participants will leave with a full set of graded pattern notes and reference materials to use going forward.
What you will learn
Participants will develop practical skills across the key areas of pattern grading.
Grading Fundamentals
- The fundamentals of pattern grading — width, length, and balance
- How to use grading rules and increments across different garments
- Manual grading methods using cut-and-spread and pivot techniques
- How to maintain dart placement, seam balance, and proportions
- Fit and design considerations when grading across multiple sizes
Session 1 — Skirt Grading
- Grading the straight skirt block including straight and A-line variations
Session 2 — Bodice Grading
- Grading the bodice front, back, and sleeve including darts and neckline
Session 3 — Pant Grading
- Grading the pant front and back legs with emphasis on rise, crotch curve, and waist and hip shaping
