Participants should have some basic sewing knowledge, though prior patternmaking experience is not required.
Overview
In this hands-on intensive participants will explore key patternmaking techniques to develop a thorough knowledge and understanding of pants — all under the guidance of industry and education experts.
Mastering the pant is a crucial foundation in patternmaking. Once you understand the underlying principles, you will be equipped to tackle complex patterns and alterations with confidence.
Over three sessions you will work through drafting techniques, fit principles, and design variations, building practical skills you can apply to both original patterns and existing commercial ones.
What you will learn
Participants will develop practical skills across several key areas of pant patternmaking.
Pattern Drafting Foundations
- Basic patternmaking terminology and how to apply it
- How to start drafting pant patterns using a block (provided)
- Understanding crotch shaping and how it affects fit
Leg Silhouettes & Design Variations
- Types of pant leg shapes, from narrow to wide
- Drafting multiple leg silhouettes with an understanding of shape, form, and fit
Waist Finishes & Waistbands
- Classic tailored waistbands and shaped waistband variations
- Different waist heights and how to apply them
Pockets & Fly Fronts
- Drafting pockets and understanding placement and construction
- Constructing fly fronts step by step
Fit & Balance
- Techniques for balancing the front and back legs to achieve correct fit
- Common fit issues and how to fix them
By the end of the workshop participants will have a deep understanding of pant patterns and the skills to confidently draft, alter, and fit pants across a range of styles.
