Overview
In this one-day workshop, Nikki Mallalieu will teach you how to take a basic tote design and customise it with fabric choices and design details to suit your needs and personality. Along the way, you’ll learn tips and tricks for creating structure, reducing seam bulk and achieving a sharp, professional edge on a fabric bag. We’ll explore ways to construct straps and pockets, hardware and interfacing options, as well as techniques and tools that help make things easier.
The resulting bag will be individual, wearable and durable, and the skills will be transferable to future projects.
This workshop is suitable for adventurous beginners through to experienced sewists who want to refine their techniques, experiment with design, and walk away with a unique, professionally finished bag and a toolkit of skills they can use repeatedly.

Materials needed
Please bring your own fabric if you have some; otherwise, we will have short-end surplus fabrics available. You will need 1 metre of fabric for the outer layer and 1 metre for the lining. Zips and fusing will be provided, please bring a reel of thread of you have specific color needs.
Recommended items to bring:
- Scissors
- Pins
- Fabric marking tools
- Any additional personal sewing supplies you prefer to use
