Mid-week Makes: A Slower, Kinder Way to Sew for Yourself
There's a particular kind of joy that comes with having a weekday morning to yourself. No school run, no rushing to clock on, no one else's schedule to work around - just a few unhurried hours to sit down and make something with your hands. If that sounds appealing, Mid-week Makes might be exactly the kind of sewing class you've been looking for.
This isn't a class that assumes you're starting from scratch, and it isn't a class that rushes you through a pattern you'll never wear. It's a relaxed, small-group workshop (just eight participants) where you choose your own project - a dress, top, shirt, pair of pants, or a crop jacket - and spend your time learning how to make a pattern that actually fits your body, not a standardised size chart from decades ago.
Sewing for the Body You Have Now
Many of us learned to sew young, or picked it up again after years away from it, only to find that commercial patterns rarely reflect the shape we are today. Bodies change over the years, and there's nothing wrong with that - but it does mean the sizing on a pattern envelope often has little to do with how a garment will actually sit on you. Mid-week Makes is built around personalised fitting. You'll work with industry-grade pattern blocks ranging from size 6 to 24, and receive one-on-one guidance to adjust the pattern until it suits your shape, your posture, and your comfort.
This is patternmaking the proper way: you make a toile (a calico mock-up), try it on, get fitted by experienced practitioners, and refine the pattern from there. It's a process that rewards patience and close attention - qualities many of us have earned plenty of over the years.
No Pressure, No Rush
If the idea of a fast-paced class filled with twenty-somethings racing to finish a project puts you off, take heart. This program is intentionally unhurried. There's time to ask questions, time to unpick and try again, and time to simply enjoy being in a room with people who share your love of making. Light refreshments are provided, and the studio is set up with proper patternmaking tables, tools, and both industrial machines and domestic overlockers, so however you prefer to work, you're covered. You're also welcome to bring your own machine if you'd rather sew on something familiar.
Building Skills, Not Just a Garment
While the end goal is a well-fitting piece you'll actually want to wear, the real value of this class lies in what you take away from it. You'll learn how to adapt a pattern to fit your body in a design you like, how to interpret a fitting session and translate it into pattern changes, and how to sew with a level of finish that elevates your work. These are skills that stay with you long after the class ends - ready to be applied to your next project, and the one after that.
A Community of Makers
There's something wonderful about learning alongside a small group of like-minded sewists, especially at a stage of life where you finally have the time to devote to a craft properly. Whether you're returning to sewing after a long break, refining skills you've built over a lifetime, or simply looking for a mid-week outlet that's creative and social, this workshop offers a welcoming space to do just that.
If you've been searching for a sewing class that respects your experience, works with your body as it is now, and gives you the time and support to do it properly, Mid-week Makes is well worth your consideration.
